The history of Varazze and its surroundings

Varazze. Any time soon? No, or rather, “Ad navalia”, as it was known in Roman times as the place where the ships that would be part of all expeditions were built. A two thousand year long connection with the sea and beaches that have always been used to build boats of all kinds up to the present day.

According to legend, on October 3, 1376, Saint Catherine of Siena arrived in this town. The future saint wanted to visit the village and during this trip, she was struck by the devastation caused by the plague.

Her intercessions made it possible to defeat the disease and a building was built, subsequently dedicated to her, the Sanctuary of Santa Caterina , located in the square of the same name, erected in the 17th century.

Its territory, equipped with a beach suitable for "launching", an activity that allows ships to be put into the water and from which the city takes its name, have made Varazze famous throughout the world .

On land, however, we can walk in the historic center, through the "alruggi".

The carruggi, or the narrow streets of the historic center of Varazze, are known as "the shopping streets": wandering through the alleys and colorful houses, among the numerous clothing and food shop windows, is an evocative and relaxing experience.

It is said that the longest and narrowest alleyway in Liguria is located right in the historic center of Varazze. An extremely narrow alley that connects via Campana to Piazza Patrone.

In addition to the sea and the beaches, Varazze offers attractions of great environmental interest: first of all the Beigua Geopark . Protected by UNESCO for its incredible geological heritage, the park is the largest protected natural area in Liguria.

The Beigua Geopark enjoys environments made up of mountains overlooking the sea, prairies, forests and splendid Mediterranean vegetation.

This natural park offers many opportunities for outdoor sporting activities , such as nature trails, Nordic Walking routes, birdwatching, mushroom picking.

A boat trip is an unmissable experience in Varazze and allows you to capture the beauty of its rugged coast.

Nautical tourism is perhaps one of the major attractions of this area: the western coast represents an exceptional setting for an excursion to the sea.

What do we mean by the “Marina di Varazze”? A place nestled in the first city, which leads the way to the sunny and well-known Riviera delle Palme. Surrounded by greenery, the marina is located in the heart of the western Ligurian Riviera , 24 km from Genoa and its airport. Marina di Varazze is the ideal starting point to reach the French Riviera and the Riviera dei Fiori, the Gulf of Tigullio and the Cinque Terre.
